30-Day Notice of Proposed Information Collection: DS-234, Special 
Immigrant Visa Biodata Form, OMB Number 1405-0203

ACTION: Notice of request for public comment and submission to OMB of 
proposed collection of information.

SUMMARY: The Department of State has submitted the following 
information collection request to the Office of Management and Budget 
(OMB) for review and approval in accordance with the emergency review 
procedures of the Paperwork Reduction Act of 1995.
     Title of Information Collection: Special Immigrant Visa 
Biodata Form.
     OMB Control Number: 1405-0203.
     Type of Request: Extension of Currently Approved 
Collection.
     Originating Office: Bureau of Population, Refugees, and 
Migration, Office of Admissions (PRM/A).
     Form Number: DS-234.
     Respondents: Iraqi and Afghan Special Immigrant Visa 
Applicants.
     Estimated Number of Respondents: 12,000 per year.
     Estimated Number of Responses: 12,000 per year.
     Average Hours per Response: 20 minutes.
     Total Estimated Burden: 4000 hours.
     Frequency: Once per respondent.
     Obligation to Respond: Required to Obtain or Retain a 
Benefit.

up to 30 days from June 1, 2012.

SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION:
    We are soliciting public comments to permit the Department to:
     Evaluate whether the proposed information collection is 
necessary for the proper performance of our functions.
     Evaluate the accuracy of our estimate of the burden of the 
proposed collection, including the validity of the methodology and 
assumptions used.
     Enhance the quality, utility, and clarity of the 
information to be collected.
     Minimize the reporting burden on those who are to respond, 
including the use of automated collection techniques or other forms of 
technology.
    Abstract of proposed collection:
    Form DS-234 elicits information used to determine the eligibility 
of Iraqi and Afghan nationals who are applying for special immigrant 
visas to receive refugee resettlement benefits.
    Methodology:
    The SIV Biodata information form (DS-234) is submitted 
electronically by the respondent to the National Visa Center, which 
will forward the forms to the Refugee Processing Center of the Bureau 
of Population, Refugees and Migration.
