Preservation

Content in FDsys is preserved to ensure permanent availability in electronic format. As a preservation repository, FDsys follows archival system standards to ensure long-term preservation and access to digital content.

Preservation objectives:

• Safeguard digital content and relevant metadata
• Assess the condition and needs of collections of digital information
• Meaningfully render content despite continually changing technology

Preservation practices:

• Self-describing packages of content and metadata
• Submitted files are maintained in a limited-access OAIS compliant preservation repository
• Weekly system backups of content and metadata
• COOP instance has near-real-time data synchronization and five minute failover capability with full content availability and system functionality

Preservation strategies:

• Refreshment
• Migration
• Emulation
