                         NATIONAL TOURISM WEEK

                                 ______

                        HON. ROBERT A. UNDERWOOD

                                of guam

                    in the house of representatives

                         Thursday, May 26, 1994

Mr. UNDERWOOD. Mr. Speaker, National Tourism Week was designed to
highlight tourism's contribution to the American economy. It is
important to note, however, that the American economy is not confined
to the 50 States but also includes the territories of the United
States. In any discussion of the role of tourism on the Nation's
economy, the territories are of vital importance.
My island home, the territory of Guam, for example, has a tourism
industry which boasts an annual revenue of over $1 billion and this
year's visitor arrivals are expected to approach 1 million. The vast
majority of our tourists are from Japan, but recently the Guam
Visitor's Bureau has begun to target other Asian countries--most
notably Korea and Taiwan--so that others may share in the splendor of
our Pacific paradise. This billion-dollar economy represents a
significant contribution to redressing the balance of payments problems
the United States has with Japan. Guam's contribution in this regard
should not go unnoticed.
Sir Yu'os Ma'ase to all those in Guam's travel industry who show our
visitors the warmth and hospitality of our beautiful island. It is only
because of the efforts of those in the industry that we are able to
celebrate the positive impact of tourism on the economy of Guam and the
Nation.
