[Congressional Bills 103th Congress] [From the U.S. Government Publishing Office] [H. Con. Res. 297 Introduced in House (IH)] 103d CONGRESS 2d Session H. CON. RES. 297 Expressing the sense of the Congress that President Clinton should ask for the resignation of Joycelyn Elders as Surgeon General of the Public Health Service. _______________________________________________________________________ IN THE HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES September 26, 1994 Mr. Stearns submitted the following concurrent resolution; which was referred to the Committee on Energy and Commerce _______________________________________________________________________ CONCURRENT RESOLUTION Expressing the sense of the Congress that President Clinton should ask for the resignation of Joycelyn Elders as Surgeon General of the Public Health Service. Whereas the health and welfare of residents of the United States is a national concern; Whereas all public office holders have a solemn responsibility to utilize their office to advance the general welfare of residents of the United States; Whereas the Surgeon General of the Public Health Service is the most visible public health official in the United States; Whereas, as Surgeon General, Joycelyn Elders has failed in her duty to represent all residents of the United States by making statements that denigrate members of certain religious and social groups; Whereas previous Surgeon Generals have served with great distinction and made substantial contributions to the health and welfare of all residents of the United States; Whereas Joycelyn Elders has used her office to advance a divisive and radical agenda; Whereas the comments made by Joycelyn Elders regarding the legality of the use and sale of narcotics undermine efforts to enforce the laws of Federal, State, and local governments; and Whereas countless other qualified individuals have the knowledge and temperament to perform the duties of the office of the Surgeon General without dividing residents of the United States along religious, political, and social lines: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the House of Representatives (the Senate concurring), That it is the sense of the Congress that President Clinton should ask for the resignation of Joycelyn Elders as Surgeon General of the Public Health Service. <all>
