 To amend the Wilderness Act to permit the landing of aircraft within 
   wilderness areas for purposes of search and rescue under certain 
                             circumstances.

    Be it enacted by the Senate and House of Representatives of the 
United States of America in Congress assembled, 

SECTION 1. SEARCH AND RESCUE BY AIRCRAFT IN WILDERNESS AREAS.

    Section 4(d) of the Wilderness Act (16 U.S.C. 1131 and following) 
is amended by adding the following at the end thereof:
    ``(8) Upon the request of any law enforcement or military authority 
(including the national guard), the landing of aircraft shall be 
permitted within any wilderness area for purposes of search and 
rescue.''.
