Whereas trails and footpaths have been an integral part of America's history, providing opportunities for recreation, exercise, and transportation; Whereas trails provide an alternative transportation system at both local and metropolitan levels; Whereas trails offer outdoor activity for the millions of Americans who walk, bicycle, ride, backpack, ski, and hunt; Whereas, by the year 2000, more than 80 percent of the Nation's population will reside in urban areas, and recreational opportunities which are close to home will be a priority; Whereas trails enrich our Nation's communities by showcasing areas of scenic beauty, historic significance, and ecological diversity; Whereas on June 5, 1993, over 750,000 people participated in ``National Trails Day'' events across the country; Whereas an organized trails system contributes to the economic vitality of a community; Whereas trails provide educational opportunities for people of all ages to observe nature and to increase awareness about and appreciation of our natural environment; and Whereas a ``National Trails Day'' will strengthen support for our national trails system on local, State, and national levels: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That June 4, 1994, is designated as ``National Trails Day''. The President is authorized and requested to issue a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe this day with appropriate programs and activities. <all>
