[Congressional Bills 103th Congress] [From the U.S. Government Publishing Office] [S.J. Res. 72 Introduced in Senate (IS)] 103d CONGRESS 1st Session S. J. RES. 72 To designate the last week of September 1993, and the last week of September of 1994, as ``National Senior Softball Week''. _______________________________________________________________________ IN THE SENATE OF THE UNITED STATES March 26 (legislative day, March 3), 1993 Mr. Riegle introduced the following joint resolution; which was read twice and referred to the Committee on the Judiciary _______________________________________________________________________ JOINT RESOLUTION To designate the last week of September 1993, and the last week of September of 1994, as ``National Senior Softball Week''. Whereas the National Association of Senior Citizen Softball (NASCS) was formed in 1985, as the forerunner to the Senior Softball World Series; Whereas NASCS was intended to dispel the myths of aging, create charity, friendship, sportsmanship, and social relationships, offer a competitive outlet through an athletic endeavor on a national and international level for people over the age of 50, promote intergenerational role modeling through participation in community activities, and promote charitable, civic, and educational activities; Whereas the Senior Softball World Series is held annually during the last week in September; the first of which was held in 1989 at Greensboro, North Carolina, the second in Scottsdale, Arizona, and the third in Palm Beach County, Florida; Whereas the 1993 World Series will be held September 27 through October 3, 1993, in Houston, Texas; Whereas it is estimated that nearly 32,000,000 individuals now play softball; Whereas the desire among seniors to continue playing softball, in addition to the growth and popularity of the health and fitness movement, means senior softball is sure to remain on the increase for years to come; and Whereas it is appropriate for the American people to recognize this wonderful segment of its population engaging in a truly American sport and serving as positive role models for American youth at a time when such role models are most needed: Now, therefore, be it Resolved by the Senate and House of Representatives of the United States of America in Congress assembled, That the last week of September 1993, and the last week of each September thereafter, are designated as ``National Senior Softball Week''. The President is authorized and requested to issue annually a proclamation calling upon the people of the United States to observe the week with appropriate ceremonies and activities. <all>
