Whereas on Mother's Day--May 14, 2000--Americans will be united in the Million Mom March; Whereas the Million Mom March will occur on the National Mall in the District of Columbia and at 63 other sites across the Nation; Whereas the purpose of the Million Mom March is to call upon the President and the Congress to enact commonsense gun legislation; Whereas 12 children in the United States are killed every day by gun violence; Whereas this gun violence has affected mothers, fathers, other family members, and friends; Whereas the mothers participating in the Million Mom March have demonstrated their grassroots leadership to eliminate gun violence from the Nation's schools and communities; and Whereas on Mother's Day and beyond, families, citizens, members of religious congregations, schools, community-based organizations, businesses, and political and cultural groups will join together as a local and national community to recognize the affects of violence against our children from guns: Now, therefore, be it Resolved, That the House of Representatives-- (1) applauds the efforts of march founder Donna Dees- Thomases and all the participants in the Million Mom March; (2) recognizes that the purpose of the Million Mom March is to end gun violence and to urge the Congress to enact commonsense gun legislation; and (3) seeks to work with the organizers and participants of the Million Mom March and all interested groups to make our communities safer by approving reasonable Federal gun safety legislation. <all>
