Abstract Data on the socio-economic characteristics of workers in the West Coast Pacific whiting harvesting and processing industry will be collected via a survey. The data will be used to supplement and validate other types of data which will be collected in focus groups convened as part of a social impact analysis of the likely effects of the next onshore-offshore allocation decision to be made by the Pacific Fishery Management Council and Secretary of Commerce. The data collection effort will involve two efforts: (1) Identification of the population to be sampled: Selected whiting processors and harvesters will be asked to provide information on the number of workers they employ by job category. (2) Collection of information from members of the population: The questions to be asked of workers in the whiting industry will cover the following topics: household income, number of dependents, dependence on whiting income and alternative sources of income, seasonality and length of employment in fisheries, age, marital status, level of education, location of permanent residence, length of time and participation in the community of permanent residence, and minority status. II. Method of Collection The survey will be administered either through a visit to processing/harvesting operations or through a mail survey. A representative sample will be selected from the firms in the industry. However, because the industry is small but diverse it is estimated that about half of all firms will be contacted. III.
