MARINE MAMMAL COMMISSION


Sunshine Act Meeting

TIME AND DATE: The Marine Mammal Commission and its Committee of 
Scientific Advisors on Marine Mammals will meet in executive session on 
Tuesday, November 18, 1997 from 8:45 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. The public 
sessions of the Commission and the Committee meeting will be held on 
Tuesday, November 18, from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., on Wednesday, 
November 19, from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., and on Thursday, November 20, 
from 9:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m.

PLACE: The Fairbanks Princess Hotel, 4477 Pikes Landing Road, 
Fairbanks, Alaska, 99709.

STATUS: The executive session will be closed to the public. At it, 
matters relating to personnel, the internal practices of the 
Commission, and international negotiations in process will be 
discussed. All other portions of the meeting will be open to public 
observation. Public participation will be allowed as time permits and 
it is determined to be desirable by the Chairman.

MATTERS TO BE CONSIDERED: The Commission and Committee will meet in 
public session to discuss a broad range of marine mammal matters. The 
focus of the meeting, however, will be on Arctic issues and on those 
marine mammal species that occur in Alaska. While subject to change, 
major issues that the Commission plans to consider at the meeting 
include: marine mammal co-management agreements; domestic and 
international polar bear and walrus programs; research and management 
issues related to bowhead whales, Steller sea lions, harbor seals, 
North Pacific fur seals, and sea otters; the Arctic Environmental 
Protection Strategy; the Arctic Council; marine mammal programs of the 
Russian Federation; the Bering Sea ecosystem; Hawaiian monk seals; and 
West Indian manatees.
