ACTION: Notice of renewal. ----------------------------------------------------------------------- SUMMARY: In accordance with the provisions of the Federal Advisory Committee Act, 5 U.S.C. App. 2, and after concurrence of the General Services Administration, the Secretary of Commerce has determined that the renewal of the Census Advisory Committees on the African American Population, American Indian and Alaska Native Populations, Asian and Pacific Islander Populations, and Hispanic Population is in the public interest in connection with the performance of duties imposed on the Department by law. EFFECTIVE DATE: March 18, 1998. SUPPLEMENTARY INFORMATION: These Committees will provide an organized and continuing channel of communication between the communities they represent and the [[Page 13168]] Bureau of the Census on its efforts to reduce the differential in the totals for all population groups during Census 2000 and on ways census data can be disseminated to maximize their usefulness to these communities and other users. The Committees will draw on the experience of their members with the 1990 census process and procedures, results of evaluations and research studies, and test censuses, and also will draw on the expertise and insight of their members to provide advice and recommendations on data collection, processing, promotional, and evaluation activities during the implementation phases of Census 2000. The Committees will provide advice regarding the tabulation plans for race and ethnic data. These Committees will function solely as an advisory body with respect to the matters described above and will comply fully with the provisions of the Federal Advisory Committee Act. Each Committee shall consist of nine members to be appointed by and serve at the discretion of the Secretary of Commerce. The Committees shall report to the Director, Bureau of the Census. The Designated Federal Official for the Advisory Committees shall be the Principal Associate Director for Programs at the Bureau of the Census.
