Food Assistance: USDA's Multiprogram Approach (Letter Report, 11/24/93, GAO/RCED-94-33). About 39 million people receive federal food assistance through the Agriculture Department's (USDA) Food and Nutrition Service. In fiscal year 1992, the Service and state agencies jointly ran 14 programs that provided food assistance at a federal cost of about $33 billion--about 58 percent of USDA's total budget; about 63 percent of this went to children. This report provides information on (1) USDA's food assistance programs; (2) the strengths and weaknesses of the current multiprogram approach; and (3) alternative approaches to delivering food assistance identified by federal, state, and other officials. --------------------------- Indexing Terms ----------------------------- REPORTNUM: RCED-94-33 TITLE: Food Assistance: USDA's Multiprogram Approach DATE: 11/24/93 SUBJECT: Food relief programs State-administered programs Federal/state relations Disadvantaged persons Public administration Child care programs Interagency relations Federal agency reorganization Welfare services Policy evaluation IDENTIFIER: Food Stamp Program USDA Puerto Rico Nutrition Assistance Program FNS Food Distribution Program on Indian Reservations National School Lunch Program National School Breakfast Program USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program Summer Food Service Program for Children Special Milk Program for Children Special Supplemental Food Program for Women, Infants, and Children WIC WIC Farmers Market Program Commodity Supplemental Food Program USDA Temporary Emergency Food Assistance Program USDA Adult Expanded Food and Nutrition Education Program Food Distribution Plan for Charitable Institutions FNS Nutrition Program for the Elderly ************************************************************************ We regret that the full text of this item is presently unavailable.
