Texas Library Joins GPO's Federal Depository Library Program
WASHINGTON - The U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) welcomes Fort Stockton Public Library of Fort Stockton, TX in GPO’s Federal Depository Library Program (FDLP). Congressman Will Hurd designates the library into the program. As a member of the FDLP, the library will provide the more than 12,000 Fort Stockton residents free access to Federal Government information in both digital and print formats.
“GPO welcomes Fort Stockton Public Library into this program that serves as a link between the Federal Government and its citizens,” said GPO Director Davita Vance-Cooks. “Libraries have been and remain a key partner in providing the American public access to information on the three branches of our Government on smartphones, tablets, laptops, and in print.”
“We are excited about being designated as a Federal Depository Library. To date, the closest Depository Library is over 300 miles away in San Antonio, Texas. The library is situated at an easily accessible location between major transportation routes and is freely accessible to the general public. The designation of the Fort Stockton Public Library is filling a void in District 23 and will provide a high level of public service to our community and the surrounding area,“ said Library Director Elva N. Valadez.
Through the FDLP, GPO works with approximately 1,150 libraries nationwide to provide public access to authentic, published information from all three branches of the Federal Government in print and electronic formats. The program's antecedents can be traced back to the act of Congress dated December 27, 1813 (3 Stat. 140), which provided that one copy of the journals and documents of the Senate and House be sent to each university and college and each historical society in each state. GPO has operated the FDLP since 1895.
GPO is the Federal Government's official, digital, secure resource for producing, procuring, cataloging, indexing, authenticating, disseminating, and preserving the official information products of the U.S. Government. The GPO is responsible for the production and distribution of information products and services for all three branches of the Federal Government, including U.S. passports for the Department of State as well as the official publications of Congress, the White House, and other Federal agencies in digital and print formats. GPO provides for permanent public access to Federal Government information at no charge through www.govinfo.gov, partnerships with approximately 1,150 libraries nationwide participating in the Federal Depository Library Program, and our secure online bookstore.
